Homemade Playdough

You'll need:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 Tbsp cream of tarter
  • food coloring
  • 1 cup flour
  • saucepan

Directions:

  1. add: water, oil, cream of tartar & food coloring in saucepan. Heat until warm.
  2. remove from heat, then add flour.
  3. knead dough until smooth.
  4. *Optional: we kneaded in a little glitter after the dough was formed, just because.

Storage:

Store dough in a air tight container or Ziploc freezer bag. The cream of tartar makes the dough last six months or longer so don't leave it out.

Our Experience:

My little Havens attention stayed on this one for quite a while. I'm happy to report he really enjoyed and the fun things he could do with the dough. Our household has been a dough free zone until today. I mean dough and carpet Eek! right? Well we took to the out doors. I learned to do that for most messy play because hosing down a play area a is way easier than sweep, mop and wiping down the kitchen. Luckily this dough didn't make too much mess with supervision of course.

I didn't have veg. oil so I used coconut oil . If you don't know coconut oil hardens at room temp. It was a little cooler outside today (for California that is) and the dough felt like it would get a little firm as it sat untouched. When i worked with it my hands would warm it up and it would soften up. It never got unmanageable at any point though so that was good.

Other then that it was a success! I'm going. to try to make ice cream play dough soon out of frosting and powdered sugar. should be fun so keep an eye out for that post soon.
